New Pop-Up Displays for the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust

In June 2019 the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust advertised for designers to tender for the production and delivery of two new 'pop-up' displays to tour the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The displays, named ‘I am a Museum’ and ‘I am an Archive,’ were conceived to take artefacts and printed archive materials from the Royal Borough’s collection to meet local communities.

Qualia's successful proposal took the form of two portable, pop-up exhibitions, designed for use in libraries, parks, churches, civic buildings, shopping centres and places of cultural and historical interest.

Concept Design: Meet The Collection Proposal

The Trust wanted the displays to appeal to families and children and to also encourage adults from local communities to share their thoughts and memories. The interactive displays initiate exploration through play and the opening of doors and drawers that have many hidden treasures inside. These include Anglo Saxon bangles, ancient pottery sherds, Georgian grocers' tokens, wax seals and antique theatre programmes.

Portability, Transportation and Durability

The displays were designed to be as light as possible and to fit in to a standard size car when folded away and packed for transportation. The exterior materials included light-weight but robust poplar plywood with protective aluminium edges and fixings. A folding trolley is used to transport the displays to venues from the car.

The choice of materials and colours worked really well with the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trusts new graphic identities. Interior finishes were left natural and coated with a conservation-grade clear finish to protect the objects and materials on display.

Meet the Collection Display Units in Use

The displays were designed, built and delivered in ten weeks and have been very well received by the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust client team. "They look great, the team are really pleased with them both, thanks so much for the hard work you've put in to this..."

Helen Young, Community Engagement Producer at the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust.

The total budget allowance was £20,000 + VAT for design, build and ongoing servicing and maintenance.
